It’s been recently discovered by security researchers that a technology called ‘UPnP’ (enabled by default on most consumer routers in the last decade) was configured incorrectly by hundreds of vendors, resulting in a massive security problem for tens of millions of people. In a nutshell it allows a remote computer to take control of your router and potentially gain access to your computers. The FBI has even issued an alert advising people to turn it off.
